With some parts of the UK experiencing rainfall every single day so far in 2026, specialist manufacturer of thermoplastic flood defence systems, Structure-flex, are highlighting the need for better flood preparedness.
According to the UK Met Office, parts of the country such as Devon, Cornwall and Worcestershire have recorded rainfall for 40 consecutive days in early 2026.
Therefore, communities, councils and landowners across the UK are once again facing the growing threat of flooding and its effects.
“Flooding is one of the leading causes of property damage in the UK – and with the prolonged rain we’ve seen in recent months, the risk of floods occurring is high. But, by having reliable flood defence systems already in place, this is no longer a concern!” says Paul Reeve, Managing Director of Structure-flex.
Wagenhuber-Mobildeich is a quickly deployed flood defence system designed in Germany and manufactured in the UK by Structure-flex.
Mobildeich’s unique design uses the weight of the flood water itself to hold it in place in flood levels of up to 2.6 metres, even if the water level rises above the barrier.
Four people can establish a one-metre-high system in under an hour by rolling it out and filling it with mains water or flood water using a pump. Because of this, it makes it far easier to deploy, use and store than sandbags or all other defences.
Recent approval by the German VdS 3855 standard has confirmed the effectiveness of Mobildeich as gold standard in modern disaster situations.
“Testing confirmed minimal water leakage over a seven-day period and that the system remained stable during simulated conditions of water overflow and strong currents. Due to its elasticity and the weight of 50 tonnes of water inside one element, it also withstood the impact of a 500kg log, representing the highest class of debris impact during flood events” adds Paul.
Wagenhuber-Mobildeich has already been widely used across Europe, where regional authorities and environmental agencies have adopted it as part of their emergency flood response strategies.
With further unsettled weather forecasted over the coming weeks, the need for reliable flood protection has never been more important.
“Across Europe, portable water-filled barriers like Wagenhuber-Mobildeich have made a real difference in emergency flood situations. As more rain is expected over the coming weeks, we hope to see greater adoption of Mobildeich in the UK to help protect more people and property from floods” concludes Paul.
As well as Mobildeich, Structure-flex also manufacture a diverse range of products from flexible thermoplastic, such as bulk packaging, proof test bags and air lift bags.
Structure-flex are also the UK’s leading supplier of lorry tension curtains, which are bonded together using high frequency welding and printed using wide-format printers at their factory in Norfolk. More details of Structure-flex can be found at https://www.structure-flex.co.uk/
